The University of Cologne

The University of Cologne is an internationally oriented university with a long tradition and unbroken popularity among students. The university regularly scores highlyin the rankings of German and foreign universities. Roughly ten percent of the university’s students come from abroad, placing it among the top German universities in this respect. The continually rising number of foreign guest professors and scientists also confirms the university’s drawing power. While many other university foundations in late medieval Germany owe their establishment to major spiritual and temporal leaders, in Cologne it was the citizens who established the university. Thus, the University of Cologne remains a municipal university in both senses: founded by the citizens of Cologne and centrally located in the heart of the urban area.

Research Profile

The University of Cologne’s six faculties are the institutional framework for its research activities. The faculties offer a total of 102 degree programmes and support 10 cross-faculty research and teaching centres. Moreover, the university boasts several cutting-edge research areas: the mechanisms of ageing-associated diseases; plant breeding research; quantum matter and materials; social and economic behaviour; socio-economic, cultural, and political change in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Internationalization

The University of Cologne has an international network comprising 85 partnerships at the university level and more than 500 partnerships at faculty level. About 1,500 Cologne students go abroad during their studies. As part of it internationalization strategy, the university has established global network partnerships with prestigious universities to promote the comprehensive internationalization of teaching and research. These partnerships go beyond conventional university agreements: they involve extensive cooperation projects in research, teaching, and campus management.
